La Grange Park
Westchester was once a longtime German farming community until it was founded in the 1920s. Built by an English utility tycoon who gave the village all English street names, Westchester eventually became a center for corporate business, coming full circle in the 1980s with the development of the Westbrook Corporate Center. These five 10-story towers contain more than one million square feet of office space, and serve as an anchor for commerce in town.
The housing stock in Westchester is a boon for fans of mid-century construction, especially mid-century modern. Architect Martin Braun designed many of the homes there. There are still homes sold by original owners, and most tend to be very well maintained in near original condition.
One piece of land that has been preserved from development is the Wolf Road Prairie, also an Illinois State Nature Preserve. Including hiking trails, birdwatching hot spots, and more than 360 native plant species, this Prarie has been maintained as one of Illinois’ highest quality natural areas.
The recreational opportunities don’t stop there in Westchester. With part of the Salt Creek Trail going through the village, eight parks, a recreation center, and a community swimming pool, there’s more than enough space to take advantage of.
The I-290 (Eisenhower) expressway has a Westchester exit on Mannheim Road.
Alpine Deli. This recent addition to the village is an expansion of an Elmwood Park staple. They carry amazing Italian meats, cheeses, and other specialties. Be sure to try the “Alpine”; order with extra peppers and always phone ahead!
